lyrics

Every day I see it looking over my shoulder
Every day I see it, looking at me.
Gonna make that mountain feel like just a boulder
Like a pebble under my feet.

In the shadow of its shadow
'Til the sunlight breaks its face
Gotta find me pickaxe, a backpack
Hike 'til I've got some breathing space

Looked at the mountain
Looked it right in the eye
The mountain gave me the finger
That's why -- I -- climb ...

The mountain, the mountain, the mountain, the mountain

Gathered all my friends; they didn't understand.
I said I didn't care, as long as they belayed.
We took the pass with ropes in hand
They didn't back my strange crusade

Three days in when they told me,
"We're going back, it's just too cold!
You can't go on alone ..."
Oh, I guess we'll see
if I can conquer this, when all's told

Looked at the mountain
Looked it right in the eye
The mountain gave me the finger
That's why -- I -- climb ...

The mountain, the mountain, the mountain, the mountain

All was darkness as I hiked that final trail
Pulled myself across ledges, tore my hands
Failure was not an option, so I would not fail
It's never gonna end while the mountain still stands

As I climbed that cliff's face in the icy mountain wind
I saw the snow-capped peak, but it looked so small
The top of the world! I'm never gonna make it there!
The wind roared back, and I could feel myself fall ...

I woke up at the bottom of an icy ravine
A fire glowed beside me, lit by one unseen
Who is this missing stranger
Who helped me out of danger?
Or did I light the fire myself in a dream?

Could it be the mountain's on my side?
Seeing to it that I wouldn't die?
Impossible! But I know now ... I've got to try!
I've got to climb! Climb! Climb!

I see the peak before me
This is the final stretch
They said I'd never make it
This is my final test
As I walk to the marker
Stand on the highest place
I'm as tall as the mountain
At last, I end this chase!
At last, I meet you face-to-face ...
